"I hate cover letters ... most recruiters don’t read them."

Updated: Oct 19, 2022

So, in 2022 do you still need a cover letter in your job search?

Here’s a list of why and when yes or no:

1. When yes

  • When job openings require you to submit a cover letter (most vacancies do) failing to submit one will be a red flag. (Recruiters might not have the time to read ALL the cover letters they receive but they will read the ones that come with and interesting CV)

  • It shows that you’ve put in the extra effort. So, even if the recruiters don’t read them, they will know you are ready to take all the steps to show you’re worth it.

  • A cover letter can set you apart from other candidates. When a recruiter is looking at two similar candidates what can make the difference? Which one would you pick? An A++ cover letter or a copied and pasted internet template?

2. When no

  • The job opening doesn’t require one and being regardless of the instructions will no be a good first impression for you!

  • You don’t have the time to customize your cover letters. worse than not submitting a cover letter is submitting a bad one. A cover letter based on a one-fits-all kind of template that can fit all the jobs you’re applying for won’t probably fit any of them.

  • There is no place to upload one on the application platform or job site where you're applying. It is a sign they don’t want it.

So, cover letters are still something that can be helpful for your job search, especially if you have important information to add (that can’t be put on CV) or There’s a personal connection/referral or a link to the company.

Present yourself with a short (but good) introduction is never a bad thing apart from when they don’t want it, of course!
